D&WAA Christmas Competition and annual prize presentation: Sunday, 14th December 2014

Report by Dave Chamberlain

Founded in 1904, and a hundred and ten years old this year, the Deal and Walmer Angling Association is one of the oldest surviving and thriving fishing clubs in Britain. On Sunday evening they presented their annual prize giving for the successful competitors throughout the year. Along with this, 20 meat vouchers and Christmas hampers were presented to the winners of the day's beach match.

All of the twenty competitors won a meat voucher; however, top weights came in a battle of the Titans, with the World's number two-rated angler, Richard Yates, gaining first place with a 24 fish catch of codling, dogfish and whiting for 6.830 kg. Second place went to 6th world-rated Saul Page with 5.970 kg and in third spot, with 17 fish weighing 2.930 kg, was Andy Manning. Fourth and fifth places went, respectively, to Tim Fagg and Dave Chamberlain with 2.840 kg and 2.789 kg.

The top three places on the 2014 competition ladder went to:

  1. John Green - 82.5 points
  2. Saul Page - 59 points
  3. Andy Manning - 56 points

Brian Smith won the top weight medal with a 15.2 kg catch of thornback rays from Deal Pier in the May competition.

The award for the largest flat caught during the year was shared by Tim Fagg, Alan Green and Mick Hambrook, who each caught a dab weighing 270 gm at the Novemmber competition.

Thanks, again, go to Brian Smith, Andy Manning and Mick Hambrook for their assistance with the pegging-out and weighing-in.

Green takes honours at Sandown with an almost fish-a-cast haul

Report by Alan Yates, East Kent Mercury: Thursday, 20th November

The latest Deal and Walmer Angling Association Club competition, fished in the groynes at Sandown, saw 25 anglers compete which is a healthy entry for a club event, especially in heavy rain and strong wind.

Match winner was local angler John Green who landed almost a fish a cast plus a first cast bonus thornback ray of 3.66 kg for a total of 7.53 kg.

Second, with a mixed bag, comprising 31 fish was Richard Yates, of St Margaret's Bay, with 6.13 kg. Two pegs away from Richard, Tim Fagg, of Deal, finished third with 29 fish for 4.81 kg.

Fourth and fifth went to Saul Page and Adam Johnson with 4.5 kg and 3.93 kg. The heaviest flat fish prize was shared between Tim Fagg, Alan Green and Mick Hambrook with dabs of 270 grams.

The Associations's final match of the year will be held on Sunday, December 14, fishing 3-7 pm at Cambridge Road (gardens), Walmer. It is the Christmas match and a celebration of the Association's 110th anniversary, with 20 meat vouchers to be won. There will also be four golden peg prizes (£50 and three bottles of malt whiskey) to be drawn from those competitors attending the presentation at the Deal Rowing Club, The Marina. The annual members' prize giving awards will also take place on the evening.

D&WAA Beach Competition: Sunday, 16th November 2014

Report by Dave Chamberlain

Twenty-five anglers spent four hours in the pouring rain to fish the latest Deal & Walmer Angling Association match at the Marina, north Deal. There was a constant flow of fish coming in - mainly whiting, pouting, doggies and the occasional dab - to make some oblivious to the four hours of rain.

  1. On form, John Green's first cast produced a ray of 3.66 kg, which he backed up with another 15 fish for a winning weight of 7.53 kg.
  2. Second, with a mixed bag comprising 31 fish. was Richard Yates, with 6.13 kg.
  3. Two pegs away from Richard, Tim Fagg put 29 fish into the bucket for 4.81 kg and third place.
  4. Fourth and fifth places went to Saul Page and Adam Johnson with 4.5 kg and 3.93 kg respectively.
  5. Heaviest flat was shared by Tim Fagg, Alan Green and Mick Hambrook with dabs of 270g.

Did I mention it rained for four hours ?

We are very grateful to Brian Smith for 'pegging out' and conducting the weigh in (with help from Mick Hambrook).

The final match of the year will be held on Sunday, 14th December, 3pm till 7pm at Cambridge Road (gardens) (51.210211, 1.402760). This Christmas match will be a celebration of the Association's 110th anniversary, with 20 meat vouchers to be won. There will also be four golden peg prizes (£50 and three bottles of malt whiskey) to be drawn from those competitors attending the presentation at the Deal Rowing Club, The Marina. The annual members' prize-giving awards will also take place on the evening, plus a raffle.

D&WAA Beach Competition: Sunday, 19th October 2014

Report by Dave Chamberlain

Tonight's Deal & Walmer Angling Association beach match was in two halves - a couple of hours of daylight and then darkness. A warm wind blowing from the Azores made the weather half-way sensible, although the strong breeze was enough to put some colour in the water on these neap tides. However, it was not until darkness that the fish started to cooperate. All but two of the field of 18 brought fish to the scales, with the catches including codling, whiting, dogfish, dabs, pouting and a Ballan wrasse. Heaviest weight with eight fish was Andy Manning (2.12 kg), closely chased from the next peg by John Green, also with eight fish for 1.75 kg. Third place with 1.75 kg and three fish was new member Adam Johnson. He also had the heaviest round fish with a codling of 0.71 kg. Dave Chamberlain had the heaviest flat - a dab weighing 0.2 kg.

D&WAA Beach Competition: Sunday, 21st September 2014

Report by Dave Chamberlain

A northerly breeze made it difficult to see the bites, however, it coloured up the sea enough to bring a few fish to the scales in the latest Deal and Walmer Angling Association's pier comp. Fifteen members competed and most brought fish to the scales. It was nice to see some decent whiting making a show along with a few dogfish. The lower deck produced the top results and Brian Smith's four fish at 1.62 kg just pipped Tim Fagg's five for 1.48 kg. Len Brown came third with 1.29 kg. Steve Hackett (1.26 kg) and Ivan Rubins (1.07 kg) managed fourth and fifth place. Brian Smith had the largest round with a dogfish of 0.59 kg.

19 Deal and Walmer Angling Association members took part in the "sole-only" match which was fished on a rising tide on the 500 yard stretch of Walmer beach between Alexandra Road (the southern end of Cambridge Road Gardens) and the Downs Sailing Club (Canada Road). At the cessation of the match, at midnight, six sizeable soles had been caught. Winner was John Smisssen with a 30 cm sole followed by joint runners up, England Junior team member Joe Smith, Tackle dealer Dean Curry and Andy Manning with identical fish of 29 cm. Saul Page (27 cm) and Mike Cox (26 cm) also had slightly smaller soles.

D&WAA Beach Competition: Saturday, 23rd August 2014

Further announcement by Doug Pettit

Full details of this competition have now been finalised by the Club Secretary and will be available to competitors on the evening of the match. In short, it will be a "flatfish-only" competition in which

  1. round fish are ineligible, and
  2. sole - if any are caught and regardless of size - take precedence over other flatfish species.

All undersized flatfish are to be measured, recorded and returned until three (3) anglers have caught sizeable flatfish, following which undersized fish will not be recorded. Please note that it is the individual angler's responsibility to ensure that, after being measured and recorded, all undersized flatfish are returned alive to the water from which they were taken and must not be retained.

The length of all flatfish is to be measured in centimetres, from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail fin and, should there be any dispute on the measurement of a flatfish, the Club Secretary's Master Measure will be the deciding measure.

The three longest sole take priority over all other flatfish caught but, if three sole are not caught, then sizeable flatfish will take the prizes. If no sizeable flatfish are caught the longest total of sole will take precedence over any other flatfish.

In summary, you will be fishing for flatties, particularly Dover, common or black sole (Solea solea) but, for the avoidance of doubt, the following flatfish species, although eligible to be measured for the competition (being flatfish), are not considered to be "sole" for such purposes:

The competition will be pegged on the stretch of Walmer beach from Cambridge Road heading north to the pier and fished between 8pm and midnight on Saturday, 23rd August, so please try to be at Cambridge Road by 7pm. The "measure-in" will take place 15 minutes after midnight.

The D&WAA is an affiliate of the Angling Trust, whose recommended retention sizes for flatfish caught at sea angling matches and competitions are set out below. Following these recommendations will ensure that neither the D&WAA nor its members are in contravention of any local bye laws set by the Kent Inshore Fishery and Conservation Authority.

Alan Yates' Sea Fishing Diary: August 2014

More timely advice from Alan Yates - check out his excellent sea fishing diary

"… One species that show at this time of year are the sole and lots of venues around the country offer the chance of this unusual flatfish. For most the sole is considered nocturnal, but the facts are that on clear water venues they do mostly feed at night, especially near dawn, whilst in muddy water they are more common in daylight.

Tactics are simply enough once you have found a venue and it's worth pointing out that sole do not show everywhere and sole venues are precise in many regions - just a matter of miles from a shoreline that produces sole will be a venue that does not. So, first look for a venue that produces sole regularly, the species seems to like shell grit and muddy sea beds and catching them once on the right venue is not that difficult. Fishing light with small size 2 or 4 hooks is essential, whilst baits include lugworm and ragworm. One top tactic is to fish short because the species are not shy of the shallows or the low tide gutter on many venues. Lots of anglers use two rods for this reason with one cast short and one cast further out which covers the options …"

D&WAA Beach Competition: Sunday, 20th July 2014

Report by Dave Chamberlain

Calm sea, clear water and a seal did not enhance the chances of the 20 anglers who fished the latest Deal and Walmer Angling Association's beach match at north Deal. The seal made itself known to each angler as it gambolled twenty yards off the shoreline in front of the pegs.

It was a single dab of 220g (7¾ oz) caught by Deal tackle dealer, Dean Curry, who took the winning weight, heaviest flat and 12 points … So, it's true - a little dab'll do ya!

As no other sizeable fish were caught, a draw for the remaining prize money was arranged.

Updated leaderboard to follow …

D&WAA Beach Competition: Sunday, 8th June 2014

Report by Dave Chamberlain

In the latest Deal and Walmer Angling Association's beach competition, 21 members fished at Cambridge Road (gardens). Conditions were more ideal for sunbathing than angling. The clear water did not help; however, perseverance paid off and some dogfish made an appearance. The high pegs - just past the gardens - found more fish with the top three weights grouped together. John Green started with a dog on his first cast and slowly bagged up through the match. The last hour and high water saw the majority of fish being caught. John's entire dog bag at 4.12 kg (9 lb 1⅓ oz) was enough to win. For second and third place Saul Page just beat Dave Andrews by catching a dog on his last cast for a total bag of 3.21 kg (7 lb 1¼ oz), against Dave's 3.03 kg (6 lb 10¾ oz). The consolation being that Dave got paid out for the heaviest fish, a dog of 0.84 kg (1 lb 13½ oz). In the all-dog catch, Alan Green found a dab of 0.11 kg (3¾ oz) for the heaviest flat pool. A pleasant evening's fishing and a well-attended match.

Updated leaderboard to follow …

D&WAA Pier Competition: Sunday, 11th May 2014

Report by Dave Chamberlain

Seventeen members fished the latest Deal and Walmer Angling Association competition on Deal Pier. The rain held off but a fresh westerly wind put some colour into the sea which helped with the catches. Brian Smith became an unstoppable fishing machine with a thornback ray of 6 kg (13 lb 3⅔ oz) within the first half hour, plus another three for a total weight of 15.2 kg (33 lb 8⅛ oz). Brian's ray was the heaviest fish and as no flats were caught he also got paid out for the second heaviest with a ray of 4.06 kg (8 lb 15¼ oz). All of Brian's rays were released alive. Richard Yates was runner-up with a ray and dogfish catch for 6.56 kg (14 lb 7⅜ oz) and Tony Peatey was third with another ray and dogs for 5.27 kg (11 lb 9⅞ oz). A total of six thornback rays were caught in the match on the bottom deck and with the coloured water some large pouts were landed as well. The way Deal Pier is fishing at the moment makes it, in my opinion, the best angling venue in Kent at the present time.

D&WAA Beach Competition: Sunday, 13th April 2014

Report by Dave Chamberlain

In the latest Deal and Walmer Angling Association beach match held at north Deal there was a good turnout of 22 members. The sea had cleared prior to the annual May weed occurrence and the fishing was slower than of late. Even in the half hour of darkness, the fish were still reluctant to feed and it was left to Luke Hutton's dogfish and two pouts to make a top weight of 0.81 kg (1 lb 12½ oz). Close behind him with a single dog, and the heaviest fish, was John Green's 0.75 kg (1 lb 10½ oz), leaving the only other sizeable fish that was caught, a dab of 0.118 kg (4⅛ oz), by Tim Fagg. Apart from Dean's dodgy pout that must have shrunk with fright and did not quite make the 18 cm that was required there were no other sizeable fish brought to the scales.

Fishing is a funny old game; however, it can also be feast or famine and most of us went hungry this evening. The next match is on Deal Pier, Sunday 11th May, 5pm to 9pm.

D&WAA Beach Competition: Sunday, 13th April 2014

Announcement by Doug Pettit

The next D&WAA members-only competition, which was originally to be held at Boundary Road on Sunday, 13th April (5pm to 9pm), will now be held at Horsa Road (51.231428, 1.404148) as the beach profile at Boundary Road is too steep to safely fish. The date and time of the match remain the same. Please remember that all competitors must be present at the Horsa Road venue no later than 30 minutes before the scheduled start time i.e. by 4:30pm.

D&WAA Beach Competition: Sunday, 9th March 2014

Report by Dave Chamberlain

A perfect spring evening encouraged 21 Deal and Walmer Angling Association members fishing in their latest beach match at Walmer Castle. The only downside was the fish … or lack of sizeable ones. The never ending pin whiting continued to jump on the hooks throughout the four hours; however, it was down to Shane Bradford's single dogfish at 0.94 kg (2 lb 1⅛ oz) to win the event. Shane's dogfish was also the largest fish and won him additional coin. Second place, also with a solitary dogfish, was John Green at 0.60 kg (1 lb 5⅛ oz). Pouting and rockling made up the rest of the weights with Julian Attwood catching four for 0.31 kg (11 oz).

In summary:

  1. Shane Bradford (0.94 kg)
  2. John Green (0.6 kg)
  3. Julian Attwood (0.31 kg)
  4. Heaviest Round: Shane Bradford (dogfish 0.9 kg)
  5. Next Heaviest Round: John Green (dogfish 0.6 kg)

The next D&WAA members-only competition will be held at Horsa Road (51.231428, 1.404148) on Sunday, 13th April (5pm to 9pm).

D&WAA Beach Competition: Sunday, 9th February 2014

Report by Doug Pettit & Dean Curry

15 hardy souls fished the D&WAA's inaugural 2014 beach competition at Cambridge Road gardens on Sunday evening. At the start the weather was fresh and blowy but the wind quickly subsided and the sky cleared to provide us with perfect fishing sea and weather conditions. There was a slight chop to the water on a rising tide and there were fish aplenty. The main stamp of fish at the weigh-in were whiting and dogfish and anglers were kept very busy throughout the evening by pin whiting and small codling (just under-sized) which were all returned safely. No flatfish were caught during the match so the "Heaviest Flat" prize was awarded to the second heaviest round fish, of which there were two, both 0.89 kg dogfish.

Special thanks to Kevin Scott for assisting with the pegging out and to Brian Smith for weighing the fish assisted by Mick Hambrook who also marshalled the competition. A special mention for Paul Charlton who was participating in a competition for the first time and who was joint winner with Brian Smith of the "Second Heaviest Round" prize.

The date of the next beach competition is Sunday, 9th March at Walmer Castle (top car park: 51.202032, 1.402374). Please remember that D&WAA competitions are open to members only so, if you wish to participate, please complete a membership form available from Dean at Pleasure Angling and Fred at Channel Angling.

Because a flat fish was not caught in the competition, the "Heaviest Flat" prize was awarded to the next heaviest round fish which was shared by Paul Charlton and Brian Smith who each caught a dogfish weighing 0.89 kg.

And the competition prize winners are:

  1. Saul Page (7.59 kg)
  2. Luke Hutton (5.3 kg)
  3. Fred Leach (4.94 kg)
